District Health Board Research Fund

The District Health Board Research Fund (DHBRF) is a partnership between the Health Research Council of New Zealand (HRC) and the 21 District Health Boards, which is effective from July 2008 until June 2009. The objective of this initiative is to commission research that addresses key knowledge gaps for DHBs and supports and promotes the translation of research into clinical practice. Research undertaken may include research on primary, secondary and tertiary services, as well as community and disability support services. The fund is worth a total of $6.2 million and up to 6 Request for Proposals (RFPs) will be released.

Governance Group
A governance group has been established to make strategic and policy decisions concerning the DHBRF. The Governance Group is involved in setting the research priorities for the fund, determining the content of the RFPs and making the final funding decisions. Acting chair of the Governance Group is currently Professor Harry Rea (Professor of Medicine, South Auckland Clinical School). The other members are Dr Gary Jackson, Professor Mason Durie, Dr Sharon Kletchko, Ms Shelley Campbell, Mr Matthew Brougham, Ms Patricia Logan and Dr Robin Olds.

Translational Research in Cardiovascular Disease, Diabetes and Obesity

A Joint Initiative in Translational Research, funded by the 21 DHBs and the HRC

A process of consultation with DHBs has been undertaken to determine priority areas for the research to be commissioned. Each area will have a steering committee appointed with particular expertise in that area to make recommendations to the Governance Group regarding the development of the research priority, the RFP and the associated assessment process. Translational research into cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity is one of the priorities identified, along with chronic care, cancer, access to services and mental health.
